Lettie Gallardo is in dire straits. Jobless, six months pregnant, and completely on her own in Los Angeles, she applies to be a delegate in the integration program with Earth's new neighbors (overlords?), even though she doesn't really qualify. It's not as if the US government would trust an out-of-work dental technician that needs to pee every twenty minutes with the most important "merger" in human history.

Except that they do. Or more accurately, her integration partner does. Kalaenus Lokurian is a mean-looking venandi with red eyes and exoskeletal plates as black as coal, and he chooses her out of thousands of applicants. It doesn't matter that he looks like a demon and the other aliens skirt around him. Lettie's got a stack of bills, and Uncle Sam is willing to pay them.

Besides, the towering war machine makes her feel safe...

And she hasn't felt that way in months.
